A few weeks ago Jersey cattle in Taranaki were sold for sensational prices, and now the Friesians are having their turn. The popularity of this breed received a remarkable demonstration at a dispersal sale of Mr John Donald’s famous Westmeath herd. The gathering was the most representative ever seen in New Zealand, and in addition three Australian States were represented. The weather was perfect, and the sale was conducted under ideal conditions. Every animal offered was tested for tuberculosis prior to the sale. The total received exceeded £11,090. Forty-seven cows averaged 108 guineas, 22 two-year-old heifers 129 guineas, 6 yearling heifers 93 guineas, 6 bulls 95 guineas, and 21 1 heifer calves 72 guineas. The top price (535 guineas) was a record auction price for New Zealand, the previous best being 510 guineas. The average price was also a record for all breeds for a herd of 100 or over. Twenty-one head were sold for export, the balance being distributed to every part of the dominion. Competition was spirited throughout, one hundred odd lots being sold in 4J hours. During the sale the auctioneers (Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co.) announced that it was their intention to finance, future purchases by dairy farmers of purebred butterfat bulls of all breeds, payment to be made on the time-purchase system.
