NEW NAVAL BASE
U.S. SEARCH IN FAR NORTH. ALEUTIAN ISLANDS SURVEY. SAN FRANCISCO, June 8. ■Simultaneously with the announcement that the United States mine-sweeper Cardinal had gone ashore on an island off the Alaskan coast, it is stated that three vessels have been sent north, with an admiral in charge. They are reported to bo seeking a prospective naval base at the Aleutian Islands. The report has caused surprise, as this is the first intimation lhat the United .States has given that her navy was seeking a naval base so far nurth.
