(Received June 22, at 9.40 p.m.) The Morpeth by-election resulted as follows: Mr Robert Smillie (Labour) 20,053 Mr F. C. Thornborough (Liberal), 13,087.—A. and N.Z. Cable. The by-election was due to the death of the sitting member. The voting at the general election in November was as follows: —Mr John Cairns (Lab.) 15,026, Mr F. C. Thornborough (L.) 10,007, Mr C. S. Shortt (C.) 6045. Mr Smillie is national secretary of the Miners’ Union.
