THE GOVERNMENT’S AIM. Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CAPETOWN, May 29. (Received May 30, at 0.10 a.m.) In the course of a debate on the defence vote, the Minister of Defence stated that the plan at which the department aimed was a permanent force of 5000, an active citizen force of 15,000, Defence Rifle Associations numbering 150,000 members, and a Royal Naval volunteer Reserve of 1215, giving an approximate total of 170,000, with 50,000 cadets. To-day they had under the various heads 146,000, with 38,000 cadets.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
