It is estimated by the Department of Commerce that about one-aoventh of the total population of the United States now live in “zoned" cities or towns. A zoned city is one which is divided into districts, in which the purposes for which buildings may be erected, their maximum height, and the area of ground they may cover are determined by by-laws. In such municipalities the regulations set aside certain sections for rpsidenecs, for apartment hou'ses, for office buildings, and for factories. Restrictions are similarly placed on the construction of garages, stores, warehouses, and so on, The largest zoned city in America is New York, which was zoned in 1916. The smallest zoned community is one with only 131 inliabitants. During 1322 the process spread considerably, especially in the smaller places. Within that period 14 towns of from 5000 to 10,000 inhabitants were added to the list, and 12 of 5000 or less, In January of the present year 109 communities were zoned, as compared with 55 a year ago.
