MOSGIEL SCHOOL COMMITTEE

, The monthly meeting of the Mosgiel School Committee was held on Monday night, Mr A. J. Paterson presiding. There was a full attendance. A notification was received from the Education Board to the effect that Mr P. Bremner’s appointment to complete the School Committee for ’ the district had been approved.—Received. Regarding the rector’s residence, the Education Board advised that it had been decided to renovate the school residence, and make it suitable for occupation by the rector. —Received. The Education Board wrote declining the application for permission for the janitor to occupy the school residence. Mr T,' K. Sidey, M.P., wrote stating that he would do all in his power to assist the committee to get an up-to-date residence for the rector erected. The Department of Health advised that dental treatment would be given to children up to primer age only. No other children would be accepted,* but the nurse would be glad to sve' advice to parents with children under school age from two years upwards, if they cared to bring the children along, and also to carrying out whatever minor treatment was necessary.

In connection with a complaint the committee had made- about a member of the teaching staff having acted as deputy returning officer at the recent Licensing Committee elections, the board forwarded a copy of the teacher’s explanation, which was to the effect that he had been offered the. position, presumably because ho had acted in a. similar capacity at the General- Election in December, when there was a school holiday. As soon as h© hod received the appointment for tho poll ho inquired as to the closing of tho school on ..that day. With the head master’s permission he accepted the appointment,, end when he had received word that tb© school would not be closed it was too lato to resign.—Received.

: A circular letter was received from the Education Board regarding the winter and spring vacations. As the Educational Institute (Otago branch) would hold its annual meeting during Winter Show week, it was hoped that schools could bo closed during the week beginning Monday, June 4 to June 11.(inclusive). —Resolved to close the school accordingly.
