Miss A. E. Barker and Miss A. J. King (Christchurch) left London in November for a trip on the Continent, and they have just come back after five, very pleasant months spent' in Paris, Italy, and Switzerland. Upon returning to England from New Zealand, Mr Stanford was head master of St. Mark’s College, Windsor, until in 1893 he was elected Rector of Wishaw, Birmingham. The Rev J J. North (Christchurch) reached London just before Easter, after having spent three months of his year’s holiday in India, where he saw a great deal of life in the East. Horn (British Manager of the Old Colony Club) has just returned from an. extended visit to the United States, where'lie was engaged in business in relation ,to the dub. He carries back, the impression that the trade slump, in the States is now passed and business is booming again. Especially is this so in the great manufacturing cities of the Middle West which he visited in the course of his trip. High salaries and expensive living are notable, features of the country. _ A clerk who in London would be receiving £260 a year as much as 5000 dollars in America. Though the cost of living is high, Mr Horn believes that the ordinary America’s great expenditure is largely attributable to the “cost of high living.” Italians, and other Continental races, and the Irish subsist more frugally over there, and are,, able to save money from their high salaries. As a result of Mr Horn’s negotiations it' has been decided that in future the -headquarters for the British Empire section of the Old Colony Club will ho in London. The British Club will be an entirely separate financial entity, but reciprocity will he observed with the clubs of the United States.
