The University Club hold tho second of its regular fortnightly meetings last Saturday evening. There were 30 members present. The Rev. L. G. Whitehead, M.A., gave a very interesting address on “Religion in Modern Life.” Tho speaker sot out to show that religion is essential to the life of our day as it was to the life of any other day. Ho defined religion as involving a valuation of our personal existence as good in relation to the universe. Ho referred to the three attempts of what .may bo called foligious natures fo escape from the harshness of the world—namely, by appeal to the past or to a future perfect vforlcl or to a future State. Strictly speaking, none of these was religious in the truest sense of the word. If one could not find hope in tho present, otio would never find it in the future. Religion was an insight- into the present. The groat goods of life wore tho good, tho beautiful, and the true, and the realisation thereof was the realisation of eternal life. Whatever the future might bring forth the Church would always have good and useful work before it in clinging to those Old World truths of personal and eternal values. At the conclusion of Mr Whitehead’s address, which was warmly applauded, several members continued the discussion, which lasted for over an hour. An election wf members was held, and the meeting terminated. as usual, with supper. At the monthly meeting of the Taiori Expansion League, held in tho Coronation Hall, Mosgiol, Mr T. Miller presided. There was a good attendance of members. Several important matters were discussed, alter which a letter was road from- tho Postmaster-general slating that as the present post office building was of brick, the department could not see its way _clear to condemn if, but it would give consideration to the making of alterations to suit the requirements of the. town. A letter was also read from the Otago Expansion League asking it to assist the Otago A. and P. Society to secure better show grounds. As funds were needed for a scheme of advertising Tuieri district, it was decided to canvass for' extra members and make an appeal for money by holding a concert or social, A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
