OTAGO RADIO ASSOCIATION

Members of the Otago Radio Association and their friends spent a very enjoyable evening at the duo room in Moray place last night where a special demonstration and lecture was delivered. Mr Cooper opened the proceedings by introducing Air Arundel, who, after a few preliminary remarks, explained, in a most interesting manner, tho dovoloprm u( of the'valve in wireless work during the war, and the various sums m o.iu ui wireless apparatus in France, England, and Germany Ho then proceeded to explain tho action of the valve as detector, amplifier, and oscillator, and gave a number of very useful hints to those using valve sets. Shortly after 8.36 p.m. Air Arundel turned on a powerful receiving set, and at 9.15 o’clock the weather report from Wellington roared in, while Air Mitchell wrote it ou the blackboard as it came through. After this he gave a demonstration with tho Aiagnavox Power Amplifier which ho attached to a Columbia ’gramaphouo, creating a tremendous volume ofsound. Air Alackio gave a very fascinating display with a portable Vulcan X-ray set, and showed members the bones in their hands and arms moving, and also tho contents of their purses. The noise of tho spark discharge was deafening, while tho arcing flame, leaping from ball to ball, was almost awe inspiring. At the conclusion of the demonstration Mr Cooper moved a hearty vote of thanks to Alessrs Arundel and Alackie, which was V.arriod by acclamation. Air AlitcholL, on behalf of the Radio Association, also expressed his gratitude to tho gentlemen who had gone to such trouble in arranging tho demonstration. He assured members that though Mr Arundel was manager of the Radio Supply Company, lie was absolutely unbiased and only too pleased to assist the club at any time. They all know he was exceptionally busy at ,present with the' installation of haSs broadcasting plant, and he was sure they were all grateful to him for giving up his time for the benefit of tho club. Air Mitchell mentioned that though members were continually asking him when tho dub would bo broadcasting again, when it came to the point it seemed that they were more interested in “receiving” the concerts or other diversions than in assisting by being present at functions, and lie said that unjets members showed more appreciation of the efforts of the committee there was no doubt that the club would not bo successful.

Some time ago regulations governing the grading and case-branding of fruit were brought in, and an important stipulation was the use of standard cases or packages. It is reported (says the Auckland Star) that many growers have not complied with the regulations in regard to the cases, and the Orchard Department is issuing imperative orders on the matter. In some instances second-hand cases with the brands of other growers are taken advantage of without the original brand being effaced. r lwo fine specimens of trout were caught by Mr E. Groad in the Orcti at Lady Barkly (says the Southland News), the cocoon minnow being used. _ Tho fish weighed lt' 2 ‘o ami 5,11 b -.respectively.
