THE SHARE MARKET

DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. Busness on the Dunedin Stock Exchange was lathej quiet yesterday for a start, but the tone impr<fved considerably towards the end of the jijriod. National Banks have had numerous reported sales at £6 7s, and there has been {plenty of inquiry on ’Change for them at orf about that figure. Holders, however, have .-shown 'little inclination for sales in the room, and on Tuesday as much as £6 7s 8d t w4s offered without response. There was one reported- sale on Monday, throe on Tuesday, three on Wednesday, and two yesterday. There has been very little movonient in other banking lines, neither buyers nor h-oldots showing much desire for business. On Thursday there was a reported sale of Bankt of New Zealande at 575, while Union Banks had two reported sales at £l3 18s (Id that '-Jay, and another yesterday at the same price-; ■ Insurances have continued to have good at firm prices’, and on Wednesday there was a 4alc of Standards at 33s 9d. Nationals, which had a reported sale at 74s on Thursday, were again sought at that fignrd yesterday, but holder’s were then asking Ms. Shipping lines have had their full shard; of inquiry, but apart from a sale and a reported sale of P.' and O. at £320, no business has been done. Westport Coals have in evidence, and on Wednesday there.’were four sales at 35s fid. These shares ■were (released twice at the same price on the following day, and then the market hardened. A side’ took place at 35s 4d, and the market closed that day with a buyer still offering that'figure. Yesterday afternoon’s call again produced a buyer at 35s Id, with no declared sellar. The interest in Westport, Stockton (old.) shares has gradually increased, and buyers aro now offering 4s sd, with holders quoting at ss. National Mortgage shares were turned over on three occasions at 77s Gd, but ofhorwi.se there was little activity in loan and ;igcncies, except on the part of buyers who (continued to seek business with slightly imprjlyed offers. There has been a good deal of adfivity in meat preserving shares, especially 'ln the contributing issue of Now Refrigeratings, which changed hands twice on Tuesday at 11s 3d, twice yesterday at 14s Id, » Mid finally at 14s. In miscellaneous lines business has been fairly brisk, but prices have .shown little alteration. Mining shares have : been turned over freely, especially Mt. Lyella, Grand Junctions, and Wailtis. The first-named two have not altered their position much, but the last-named has fallen from : .3oa lid to 30s. Rise and Shines were turned over at Is on Thursday, and have since ’had inquiry at Kkl. Tho demand for all classes of War Bonds has fallen off to a slight extent, but tlicro have been three transactions in 1938 4£ per cents, at £97 5s (two of. Bonds and one of Inscribed Stock).
