PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD.

There were .present at the monthly meeting on Thursday afternofxn Messrs H. Allan (chairman), V. M. Dickinson, D. Hug-bos, J. Sawle, W. J. Lewis, S. N. Muir, S. Hinkley, W. Rowlands, and R. Lee. The Postmaster-General, in replying to a letter from the board regarding post office accommodation at Portobello, stated that the need for improvement was recognised by the department, but as there were other similar cases he could not do more than promise that the improving of the accommodation at Portobello would be dealt jvith in its order of urgency with other works.— Received. It was stated that Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P., was doing his best to obtain better accommodation. Messrs Solomon, Gascoigne, and Sinclair sent a copy of correspondence with the City Council in respect to the stonewalling being included in the Beach road agreement as to upkeep.—Noted. C. P. Free, secretary Macandrew Bay Bathing Box Committee, asked permission to cut gum trees for piling a bathing shed for school children attending North-East Harbour School.—Permission given. Mr J. Logan, county clerk and returning officer, Mosgiol, advised that he had fixed April 10 as the date for the closing of nominations for a member to represent the combined district on the Harbour Board.— Clerrk to attend to matter. Mr R. S. Allan, engineer, reported there was a balance of £ls available for metalling Beach road, and Dunford Bros, had been instructed to deliver rnetai on A section of the road at 10s per cubic yard. Mr Allan recommended that application be made for £l5O to be spent on the road between Portobello and Gill’s corner in rotten rock at 13s per yard, and for £IOO on the road north of Portobello in metal at 15s fid per yard.—Approved. Reports on the work done during the past month ■ were submitted by members. In Broad Bay subdivision the surfacemen had been cleaning water tables all the month except for the time lost through heavy rain. —Approved. In Portobello subdivision tho surfacemen had cleaned water tables on Lewis road and done general repairs; repaired North and Poach roads; quarried metal in Lewis’s and Harwood’s quarries; blinded metal at Hooper’s Inlet; cleared water tables at Wickliffc Bnv: repaired bridge on North road, and other work. —Approved. In' North-East Harbour the principal work bad been the cleaning of water tables; six yards of metal spread in District road, Wharfedale. Beach road needed patching, and Macandrew road and Ryu I terrace required metalling. Other work also required attention. A surfaceman was instructed to repair a roadisde seat at NorthEast Harbour.—Approved.
