ILLEGAL PRACTICES

A MAN CHARGED. Hyman Isaacs was charged at Ihe- City Police Court late yesterday afternoon, before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., on two charges. The first was with haring, on February io, been guilty of an illegal operation, and the second with conspiring, with others, to procure abortion. Mr Hanlon appeared for accused, and Sub-inspector Eccles represented the police. It was explained that Dr Evans, one of the witnesses in the case, wanted to get away, and his evidence was taken.

Dr Evans stated that on February 13 about 10 p.m. he had examined a young girl. Ho described her condition, and said that from his examination his opinion was that she was about two months pregnant. Tho instruments produced were male catheters, the curve of which had been altered. They might be used for an illegal purpose. In August, 1922, he had examined another girl.

Mr Hanlon objected. Sub-inspector Eccles explained that this woman had been found in accused’s promises.

Mr Hanlon: There is no evidence of that. It was finally decided to take this particular evidence separately. Witness then stated that in August, 1922, he examined the other girl, who ho considered was between two and two and a-half months pregnant. The case was then adjourned till Monday next, bail being allowed accused in £3OO and two sureties of £l5O each on the first charge and his own recognisance on tho second.
