THE OTIRA TUNNEL
WORK NEARING COMPLETION. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. January 17. A press repVesenlativo who made a trip through the Otira tunnel on Tuesday says that the official estimate is that the work will be completed in May, and providing there are no untoward circumstances, this expectation should be realised. The workmen are tightening up the viaduct- at the Arthur’s Pass end. and at both ends there are some rail laying and ballasting to be done. Timber is being brought through by the temporary electrical system- for the service buildings at the Arthur’s Pass end. The installing of the permanent overhead cables is to be commenced this week. The fears expressed in the early stages of the work of boring the hole to tho effect that the springs would be difficult to control are not in the slightest extent being realised. Everything connected with the work and its difficult approaches is of outstanding solidity, nothing that could he humanly provided to ensure safety and permanency having been neglected.
