SOCIAL AMENITIES.

TO TIIE EDITOB. Sin,—Af(or having peru&cd your article on "Social Amenities'' and the letter by "Arrow." ■ endorsing it, in your issue of yesterday, may 1 trespass Briefly to «n----dorse not only the opinions expressed both in your article and in your correspondent's letter but also to express my personal appreciation of Mr and Mrs Barling's efforts to ofßcienlly cater for the public of Dunedin and elsewhere. In justification for my wishing to do so. I may state that for practically the last two years I have partaken of luncheon and tea ilailv at the Savoy. The entering in the old tea room and lounge was always all that could bo desired, but, in my opinion, (hey have surpassed all previous efforts in the new "Tudor" room, and I absolutely agree with "Arrow" in maintaining that they thoroughly deserve their full measure of steady support from the public. I liavo had experience of "eating" in hotels and restaurants in many parts of the world, and feel confident in saying that the city of Dunedin may now congratulate herself on possessing a restaurant and tearooms which, of their type, are unique anvwhore. In these days of bustle nowadays we are all of us more or less apt to discount the vnluo of bright but restful and congenial siirroundinirs, and to grudge the scant but. necessary time spent upon eating ouv mc-i.ls. Nevertheless, it is n scientific fact that such cannot but tend (o have a beneficial effect upon our digestion, and in consequence our general health. As for the new lounge, whore one may. if so desired, dinner rest awhile'' (and smoke), there is no need to rhapsodise upon its material comforts. Suffice it, to «nv that it is entirely in keening.

The good taste as evidently manifested hy the general scheme of decoration, the paintings, pond lighting, and ventilation, and last, but not least, the wealth of tastefully arranged fresh flowers, nil tend to make tbo Savoy n very pleasant place for tbo average man of business, or in fact anvone, to have meals in. The cooking and service are “par excelfence,” and. finally, the chief considera'ion lo many of ns. the prices are reasonable 1 have been far further and paid three times a« much and fared worse. As “Arrow” put it the flavor certainly denotes a distincr picbe in the progress of Dunedin. May it ever prosper is my sincere wish.—l am etc. January 16. Connoisseur
