BRIGHTON CARNIVAL

In spite nf rain in (bo early part of the morning, a large number of people gathered on tho Brighton beach on Saturday afternoon, the attraction being a competition afternoon in aid of tho Sea View Queen (Miss Lorna Begg). Competition for the queens is becoming very keen, and all three districts are working hard for their respective candidates. Brighton Township held a rally in the school grounds, and in the evening organised a successful concert and dance at Taieri Mouth in aid of funds for the Brighton Queen (Miss Minnie A burn). Ocean View's activities consisted of a dance in Mr Bush’s barn on Saturday evening, when (here was a largo number present, amongst them being Mr M. Stevenson, chairman of (he Carnival Committee, and Mr J. Conmfces (organiser of the carnival). Tho proceeds from the dance swelled considerably the funds of the Ocean View Queen (Miss Myrtle Bush). The S-ea View competition afternoon was particularly enjoyable, amusement being the keynote during the beautiful afternoon. The entries for the various events were very largo, particularly for tho ladies’ nail-driving event, which was won finally by Mrs Wilson, Wellington. The men’s hat-trimming competition evoked shrieks of laughter. Tho judges (Mcsdamcs Moir and Allan) awarded first prize to Mr W. Thomson, sen., and second to Mr Stevenson. The hairdressing competition also caused great merriment, tho results of tho gentlemen’s efforts and the methods they employed being highly diverting. Especially humorous was the attempt of tho chairman to dross the hair of the Sea View Queen. First prize was given by the judges (Mesdames Easton and M Adam) to Mr R. Crimp and partner. There were many competitors for the darning event, which was indulged in hv young and old, the prize finally going to Mr K. Crimp. Threading tho needle was keenly contested by a large number of entrants, tho race being won by Miss Finney and hc-r partner. : All the competitions were under the capable supervision of Mr Gordon Grant, who was ably assisted by an energetic party. On bohiilf of the Ca'rnival Committee. Mr Stevenson thanked Mr Coombes and all (hoso who had worked so splendidly to make tho afternoor. the great, success that it was. During the day a dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies, under the supervision of Mrs William Thomson.
