SHOOTING.

The Dunedin Defence Kifle Club fired the second competition for Mr Speight's prizes on Saturday. The following are the scores:

KIWI DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. The Kiwi Defence Rifle Club fired the second competition of the third match of the championship series on Saturday afternoon.' The conditions were ideal for the first range, but the wind became flighty os the afternoon progressed. Rifleman R. Gillick made an exceptionally good shoot for the day—97 out of a possible 100; his target reading at 500 yards 5445553355; and at 600 yards 5555555515. The attendance was only fair. The club evidently has a few cricket enthusiasts among its members. The following arc the scores: —

ORIGIN OR X-RAYS. TO THE EDJTOIt. Sir, —An article in Saturday's Daily Time?, “Origin cf X-Rays,” by Mr W. Thomson, of Manchester, nave Runtgen the credit of the discovery. The following from Stead's Borderland (1905) may interest: some of your readers: Dr Kraft, writing to the Frankfurter Zeitung, alleges that, the famous discovery of Professor Hontgen is, in reality, a rediscovery of the odic rays, the existence and nature of which wore first, proclaimed by Baron von Rnichenbr.eh upwards of 40 years ago. when Dnbois-Rcymond, perhaps the most. f atnmts French nliysiologist of his day, coolly characterifod ids scientific labours as “the i.io.st deplorable aberrations that had e'.er scattered the brains of u human being,” and as “fables that deserved to be flung on the fire.” And now comes Professor Rontgen, who demonstrates beyond all dispute that these “deplorable aberrations” of Reichcnbaeb were really the revelations of a great scientific, truth. In his “Der sendee Mensch und sein Verhalten zutn Ode,” published at Stutt.gard and Tubingen in (lie years 1854-1855, there will bo found an page 2252 the following passage;—“Madame Iv. was amusing hersolf by bringing the back of her bond near the conductor, so as to draw forth electricity with the lops of her fingers, when these by rear nit of the odic current became so transparent that, she could distinguish with precision the veins, the nerves, the tendons, and the muscular ligaments. This may prove to be of incalculable efficacy in therapeutics, especially for purposes of diagnosis. For, given the. possibility of rendering the body of every siek person diaphanous by good sensitives, these will be in a position to discern what internal organ may be morbidly affected and what, progress it, is making towards amelioration or deterioration. Moreover, the physiological processes of the body in health may bo examined in the' same way.” Hero wo have the X-rays accurately described, and their utility to the science of therapeutics clearly pointed out, more than 40 years ago by the great chemist who discovered creosote and paraffin, who was one of the first geologists of his day. But (he Daren von Reiehenhaob was a spiritualist., and therefore official science, which was then, ns it is now, materialistic to its firmer lips, received his discovery of what are now called t,he -v-rav.s with derision. It should he added that, (lie very word "Od” expresses the idea of an all-penetrating force in nature.—-I am, etc., Mura.
