SUCCESSFUL FRONTIER OPERATIONS. EXPLOSION AT BIHAR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright DELHI, January 12. In further frontier air operations, 16 machines macle nine flights, dropping five and a-half tons of bombs, also two reconnaissance flights. Very little movement was observed. The bombing and shelling of Makin continues. The enemy’s casualties included several important leaders. An ammunition dump wa,-, blown up. The air operations have produced considerable moral effect among the hostile tribes who were bombed.' They show indications of a desire to know the terms on which a settlement might be made. A bad gas explosion occurred in the Bihar c6al mine, belonging to the Bengal Coal Company. Seventeen miners were killed outright, and 57 have since died. In view of the financial difficulties of the Government, the administrators of the United Provinces have decided to accept a monthly salary of 4000 rupees instead of 5300.—A. and N.Z. Cable. NEW AFGHAN CAPITAL. IMPORTANT ARMY REDUCTIONS. DELHI, January 1?,. The laying out has been completed of the new Afghan capital at Chardeh, five miles from Kabul. The construction of the -Amir’s palace has been commenced. The Amir is steadily pursuing a policy of retrenchment. Important reductions have been made in the size of the Army, and in the salaries of officers and men. It is reported that the Afghan trade delegates are considering the draft of the Anglo-Afghan Trade Convention at Jelallabad, whither the British delegates were expected to return next week.
