ADVANCE PARTY LEAVES LONDON. AN AMBITIOUS PROGRAMME. Proas Association—-By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January' 4. The liner Ballarat is bound for Australia flying the flag of the British Pacific Science Expedition. She is bringing an advance party of scientist*, including Mr Connolly (geologist), Mr Church (ornithologist), Mr Prescot (zoologist), Mr Frewen .(entomologist), and Mr Findlay (topograph ist). The object of the expedition is the thorough scientific exploration of New Guinea. The party will remain in Melbourne for some little time, and then proceed to Cape Yorke to study geological conditions before crossing the straits to New Guinea. The expedition is influentially supported, and is prepared to spend £BO,OOO during the four years’ work. The duties of the present advance party are to select base camps and arrange for carrier transport and supplies in New Guinea for tho main party, consisting of 20 scientists, who will leave England towards the end of 1924. After the preliminary investigations are completed the advance party will return to England to report to a committee before the main party leaves.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
