ASSYRIA’S INDEPENDENCE

ULTIMATUM TO M. POINCARE. Press Aaaociation-f-By Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, January 2. (Received Jan. 2, at 7.25 p.m.) General Agha Petros (President of the National Executive Committee 6f Assyrian and Chaldean people) has sent an 'ultimatum to M. Poincare declaring the formal independence of 2,000,000 people spread around the Tigris area. General Petros contends that his countrymen are perfectly capable of defending their own interests. When attacked by Kurds they won on each occasion. Their guns are spoils won from the Turks. The nature of the country is such that, if undefended, it would be impossible of attack before May owing to the snow-covered mountain rapges. All the weak places are defended by machine jyuns and all oil centres are protected by Assyrian troops. General Petros professes the closest symnathy with Great Britain, but is alarmed lest his country should be used as a political pawn.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
