SPORTING.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER MEETING CONCLUDED. lie Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meetJ was concluded in fine but dullish lather, but fortunately a threat of rain 1 not become a fact until the card conided. The track was much firmer than the opening day, and the card again ovided some interesting racing. The atidance compared favourably with that of e opening day, and the financial returns list be deemed satisfactory when viewed the light of the general tendency toirds shrinkage in that respect. Mr A. D. ‘lvor did satisfactory work at the barrier. Bid could adopt with advantage the method lining up the field prior to the signal dicating that the investments had been ilanced. He did so in connection with e Taihoa Handicap, and made the best fort he achieved at the meeting. The eeting served to introduce Mr W. Russell a handienpper, and whilst it would noi i wise to express a pronounced opinion ns the value of his work on the results of le meeting, it may be said that he may oye a much needed addition to the ranks weight adjusters in the South Island, he meeting, taken all round, was very ijoyable, good weather and participation a popular sport helping to make Tngatui gather popularity as a sporting ndezvous at holiday time. Backers singled out Mazama and St. Easel the Milburn Hurdles, and they wore ght on the spot, as they split, the dividend ■oney for first and second after a good ice. Sherlock took up the role of pacelaker, and was always closely attended by ed Admiral, Grange, and Londonderry, hilst at the far turn Mazama was well ack. Londonderry came through on the uis at the home turn, and led to the ist hurdle, but sprawled on landing. He, owever, appeared to have the race won t the distance, and as on the previous ay was taking things rather easily , when t. Easel and Mazama flashed on the scone nd in a good finish St. Easel just got iero from Mazama, whilst Londonderry as about half a length away. Claverhouse light have been more dangerous, but his Ider appeared to turn loose at his fences, nd did not help his chances by being irown back in the saddle each time the erse took off at a jump. , Sweet Memory as prominent in the early stages, but ided out. , , ~ The Fernhill Handicap field caused trouble t the post, the principal offender being laconteur, who finally was first to show ut when the barrier rose. When the field attled down Martial Dance took charge rom Petunia, Dianella, Proceeder, and KDUghrea. San Salvador joined the leaders efore reaching the home turn, "where Peunia took charge. At the distance Loughea, who was boring in on the rails, finally ame through and won by well over a length rom San Salvador, who apparently had ery little in his favour from Frisco Mail, trho arrived late on the scene with a good on after being well back in the early stages f. the race. Raconteur appeared to get ourth place, but the barren honours were .warded to Petunia, and then came Did.iella. The winner obviously benefited by , change of riders, and is apparently not a joy’s horse. He won well, but lie requires ixperienced horsemanship to produce his jest In the preliminary First Aid unhipped his rider, and afterwards jumped he .rails. , , Lucinette moved a bit sore when she pent down. The Parisian was smartest to iegin, and Eaton Bells soon ran into second dace, whilst Dinner Bell and Lucinette vere a bit slow to move. Eaton Bells fathered The Parisian at t the turn and, cent busy, came on to win by over two engths from Carpentier, who beat Luciiette by about a length and a-half. Dinler Bell was finishing on, but his effort iame too late. Olympia made a run in the ifcraight, but could not gather sufficient vay to bring him near the money, ihe vinner is a shapely Australian-bred filly, jot by the imported horse Eaton Lad from he Multiform mare Formicary. ■ ■ Many Kittle was elected a slightly better avourite than Limelight in the St. Andrew s handicap, and fair support came tor Corn Jigs and Silver Peak, but the others were >omparativoly neglected. They got away rom a prompt despatch, and when they titled down Corn Rigs was in charge, from l close-running field, with the exception of General Advance, who had dropped back. Vlany Kittle had Corn Rigs settled at the mme turn, and was in charge approachng the distance, but here Limelight on She outside and Silver Peak on the rails arrived on tho scene. They soon had Many Kittle’s measure, and Limelight looked a winner, but Silver Peak beat her nicely at the' finish. Whipping Boy was a moderate third, and then came Many Kittle and general Advance. The last-named lost ground over the first half-mile, run in |9aec, but was coming on at the end, and should be much better suited over more ground. Oorn Bigs uguin failed when, pinched, and finished last. Battle Scene was sent out a slightly bettor favourite than Bon Spec in the Grand Stand Handicap. They were in good line it the release of the barrier, and 1 . Kerb, who was left and last to move in the Federal Handicap, reversed the order, and it once showed out in front from Bon Spec. Kerb won from end to end, and Battle Scene, who threatened danger at the turn, laded out at the business end, and Mantua came through and stalled off Deucalion for second money. Deucalion ran a_ good race for a horse who has been running over a distance. Listening Post never seemed to pace it with the light-weights, although, running behind Kerb, Battle Scene, and Bon Spec as they were racing for the home turn. Prior to tho start for the Taihoa Handicap the starter lined his field up whilst waiting for the balloon to rise, and could adopt similar methods with advantage. They got away from an excellent line, and Bonnie Friend and Ravenna singled themselves out before reaching the far turn. Ravenna was attended by Uleaborg and Avispado at the home turn. She. kept on and won from - Uleaborg,. whilst Contempt, wide on the outside, appeared to drop from the clouds, and was flying at the finish, but failed to get up, but it was in doubt as to what had gained second place until the numbers went up. Ruena also finished fast, and was close up with Contempt. Wharfedale was well up at the turn, but weight anchored him in the run home, and so it did to Avispado. who appeared to have a chance as they entered the straight. Ardour, with the benefit of a 71b allowance, really made a one-horse race of the Allanton Welter, but with her out of th» way. it was a fine finish, as Osterman, Twinkle, and Eleus were almost in line, and Tin Soldier and Red Gown were close up. Sunny Loch outclassed the field in the Farewell Handicap, and won comfortably. Etta was in charge three furlongs from home, but she ran wide at the turn, or would at least have been second, although holding no chance with tho winner. After the Grand Stand Handicap a complaint by G. Fisher (In the Pink) and E. Deslandes (Mantua) of having been crossed at the five-furlong, four-fnrlong, and threelurlong posts by C. R. Emersop (Listening Post) was inquired into by the judicial stewards. After hearing statements of tho.. above riders and F. E. Jones (Deucalion), it was decided that the evidence did not warrant any action being taken. In connection with the above, it. may be said that interference possibly took place in the early part of the race, but at the three-furlong post Kerb. Battle Scene, Bon Spec._ and Listening Post were practically running in single file, and at that stage no other horse was near Listening Post. The sum put through the tot alias, tor was £27,322 10s. and the total for the two days was. £57,865. The second dav of tho corresponding day for last year the investments were £31,341 10s, and the total for the two days £64,439. For the two days there was this year a decrease of £6574. Foiloiving are the results: MILBURN HURDLE HANDICAP. Of 250sovs, second horse SOsovs, and the third 25sovs. One mile and a-half. 2—Mr C.
