BOWLING.

Bv Jack. The greens were on the heavy side for the continuation of the interclub matches on Saturday afternoon, but otherwise the conditions were entirely favourable. At the conclusion of the previous round five clubs—Caledonian, Fairfield, Roslyn, Kaikorai, and St. Kitda —were at the head of the list with four points each, but of these clubs Caledonian was the only one to secure a two-point win on Saturday. Roslyn, with a one point win, fills second _ place, and six clubs—Fairfield, Kaikorai, St. Kilda, Dunedin, Mornington, and Taieri—divide the honours of third positon. Caversharp. which made a bold bid for the championship last season, has not yet opened its scoring account, and Otago and NorthEast Valley have one point each to their credit. Many changes in the position of the teams can, however, be expected, before the final stages of the competition are reached. Dunedin met Roslyn in four sections and Kaituna in two sections. Against the former each side won two games, and in the latter game each won a section. In the Roslyn-Dunedin game, Campbell (R.) went down heavily to Barnes, scoring 14 to the Dunedin skip’s 26. J. Hutchison (D.) put on 23 to Morrison’s 14, and 0. Anderson (R.) with 32 had a runaway win from Smith, who had to be content with a modest 12. In the Kaituna-Dunedin game Gale established a big margin over Bentley, winning bv 24 to 10, but the heaviest crash of the day was sustained by Pa.vne (K.), whose total was 10 to Nelson’s 41. Caledonian and St. Kilda met in four sections. Caledonian winning in three and losing in one, although St. Kilda s total exceeded that of Caledonian. Summerell (St. K.) scored 26 to Hutchison’s 12, and Walker (St. K.) amassed 33 to Honeyman’s 17. The other game in this section between rinks skipped by Hellycr (St. K.) and Tilli© (C.) was won by the former by on© point. St. Kilda thus winning each game in the section. In the next section Stuart (Sr,. K.) defeated Lyng (C.) by 23 to 15, and Irvine (St. Tv.) defeated Amtman (C.) by 24 to 13. but Isaac (C.l more than wiped off the deficit by registering a total of 29 to Jacobson’s 5. On the Caledonian green Andrews (C.) finished with a margin of 10 over Alexander (St. K). and W. . Latham (C.) finished 6up on 'Claridge. Foster (C.) and Pitts (St. K.) had a tough fight, and finished with honours easy—lß all. M'Curdy (St. K.' was in good form, and put together 25 to Honaghan’s 14. and Tamblyn (St. K.) further improved St. Kilda’s position by finishing three up on Murray. It was left to Smith (C.) to retrieve the position, and this he did to the extent of 31 to 10 against Adess. . . Caledonian’s fifth section met Kaikorai. and finished with a winning margin of 27 points. W. Lindsay (an ©x-member of the Caledonian Club) defeated D. Scott by two points, but Kaikorai’s success did not extend further, Dey (C.) defeating Allnutt by 22 to 15, and Anderson (G.) wanning from M‘Gregor by 30 to 12. Kaituna and Kaikorai met in one section, and a fairly close contest resulted, the former winning by 61 to 54. Fairfield suffered their first set-back, losing to Kaituna by 9 points. Balm ace wen registered their first interclub win for the season at the expense of North-East Valley, the hill players claiming the advantage in three sections out of four. Strang (N.E.V.), who is evidently not in his best form this season, went down by 16 points to Grater (B.) and Ferguson (a. pieccntly-promoted Balmacewen skip) compiled 23 to Wright’s 15. Rigby (N.E.V.) 28 had a comfortable win from Morrison (B.). and Wright (B.) won by two points from bis old elubmato, Owen." Glover (B.) and Tonkin (N.E.V.) finished with a score of 23 each after a well-con-torted game. Sneeston (N.E.V.). with a score of 30. had no difficulty in accounting for Allen, the latter’s total closing for seven. Watson (B.) 27 finished 11 up on Lawson. Interest in the four-rink championship continues to be as keen as ever. At the conclusion of the third round Rosiyn, with three wins and no losses, heads the list for section A, and West Harbour, with a similar performance, holds pride of place in section B. The fourth round is not yet completed. Balmadewen secured' a double victory over North-East Valley last week, winning in the four-rink championship and interclub game. In the four-rink game Lambeth (Balmacewen) and Rigby (North-East Valley) had a close contest. Ihe Valley skip scored four on the first three heads, Lambeth following with two singles. Rigby got a brace on the next end and Balmacewen then held the mat for five consecutive heads, increasing their total to 10 and placing Valley four points in arrears. Rigby's men made a good response, adding nine points to their opponents’ one, and winning by two. Watson (Balmacewen) won all the way from Strang (North-East Valley), finishing with a margin of 19 points to the good in a 16 head game. On the twelfth head Watson lead by 21 to 15 and finished up with a score of 27 to 8. Gladding (Strang’s third player) was right off his game. The best contest of the evening was that between Wright (Balmacewen) and Tonkin (North-East Valley). Tonkin established a fair lead early in the game, leading by 9 to 3 on the sixth head. Wright’s men then got into their stride, scoring on six heads in succession and taking the load for the first time—l1 —9. Tonkin added a five on the next head and Wright replied with a three bringing the scores level —14 all. 'The final scores were 17-17. Owen (North-East Valley) quickly took the lead against Glover (Balmacewen). and was never headed, finishing with a score ot 22 to his opponent’s 9. In the North-East Valley Club’s singles championship H. J. Duncan secured two good scalps in succession by defeating J. Tonkin bv 21 to 13, and J. Rigby by 21 to 12. The following rink from the North-East Valley Club will take part in the Dominion tournament to be played in Auckland next January:— H. J. Duncan, W. J. Gladding, J. Rigby, and J. Tonkin. Bowlers are reminded that entries for the Dunedin Centre Christmas tournament close on Tuesday next. Play will be confined to rinks only. As it is many years since the centre has held a tournament at Christmas and this one is in the nature of an experiment, it is hoped that local players will give it hearty support. Play will commence on Boxing Day, December 26, at 8.30 a.m. 'Hiree' games of 21 heads will be played each day and each player will be entitled to at least five games. There is a time limit of two and a-hnlf hours on each game. Only one game will be played in the morning so there will be ample time for players to get away for lunch before the second game commences For the last few years there has been a tendency on the part ot the more experienced players to get together and form a rink. This frequently has the effect of shutting emit the younger players who naturally would like to play in tournaments, but do not care to enter as they cannot get an experienced player to lead them. If the experienced players will remember the claims of the less experienced it will make for a larger entry for the tournament and will also probably make for keener enjoyment.
