RUGBY FOOTBALL. In the soven-a-side tournament of the Presbyterian Bible classes, held on Saturday, tho senior competition was won by South Dunedin, with Port Chalmers second. The intermediate competition was won by Knox Rectory, South Dunedin being second. In the. junior competition South Dunedin came first, with Anderson’s Bay second. In all, 30 teams competed. WELLINGTON WEST COAST v SOUTHERN. A WIN FOR THE FORMER. (Pee United Pkess Association.) WELLINGTON,. October 1. The Wellington West Coast touring team defeated the Southern touring team in the final match of the season by 31 points to 12. The former team displayed tho better combination, the forwards being very keen. The score at the end of tho first spell was 21—3. Tries wero secured by Wylie (2), Gibson, M'Crae, M'Cabe, Connor. Murphy converted five and also kicked a penalty. For tho Southern team Gibson, Mahoney, and Thomas scored, and Corner kicked a penalty. ALHAMBRA FOOTBALL CLUB DAY. The popularity of tho Alhambra's annual Club Day could bo gauged by tho largo number of past and present members and their lady friends who assembled at Opoho on Saturday in ideal weather. During tho afternoon a lengthy programme of races was gone through, and the Albany Street School IBand played several selections. Thor© were two matches set down for decision, tho first, between Hillside Workshops and Alhambra Fourth, resulting in a draw, tries lor tho former being scored by Craik and Hurndell, while Macky and Wylie were responsible for Alhambra’s points. Mr I. Grant was referee. Tho Past and Present match resulted in a win for tho former. When presenting tho prizes at the close of the proceedings, the Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) voiced the opinion of all when he said that tho 1923 function would go down in the club’s history as a big success. LEAGUE FOOTBALL. SOUTH AUCKLAND BEATS AUCKLAND. AN EXCITING GAME. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, October 1. Auckland met South Auckland in ideal weather, before an attendance of 3000. Keen interest was shown in this match owing to the local team having previously beaten Auckland by one point for the Northern Union Challenge Cup. A fast, exciting game resulted, 'the score at half-time being: South Auckland 15, Auckland S. Tho final scoro was: South Auckland 28, Auckland 16. The backs of each side wero fairly even. Auckland had tho honours in scrumheeling, ■: but the home team was superior in oilier departments. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. WESTERN CLUB v. HIGH SCHOOL. LOCAL TEAM WINS. A return match between teams representing the Western Club (Christchurch) and the Otago Boys Hign School was played at Culling Park on Saturday. Otago kifcked off with tho breeze and pressed for a while, Grant, kicking over. School left wing attacked, a fine centre by Grant going light across the goal mouth for naught. School continued to press, aided by the wind, but the Western defence stood well, Moorllonse at centre-half and Bennett at right back clearing strongly. Two attacks by Western left wing (Thompson) saw the ball kicked over. A, hot School attack from tho goalkick saw Duncan and Notman within an ac© of scoring, but Sim, in goal, cleared strongly. From a further School attack Notman swung across to Duncan, to Reekie, who beat Bennett smartly and scored with a fast screw shot. School I—o. Western attacked again by the left, Thompson centring well. From a melee in front of the School goal Stewart placed the ball in. School 1, Western 1 Western repeated their attack, Caskie, in goal, clearing with a strong kick. School had a turn at attacking, Notman’s spot going behind. Imrie returned the' goal-kick with interest, Sim, in goal, cloaring just in time bv punching over. Nothing came of the goal-kick. From good work in the forwards by Grant and Duncan, Notman made a good attempt to head in, Sim clearing. Give-and-tako play followed, several School shots going over, Imrie, at back, repulsing several Western attacks. Lively play followed at each end alternately. Several good centres came in from Thompson on the left win" for Western, Imrie constantly proving a strong back in clearing. A further strong centre from Thompson eay trouble for School, both backs being cut out. Caskie came out, leaving an open goal, but Harbut put over the top, a great chance going for naught. Shortly Caskie again bad to clear, and was successful with a mighty punch to half-way. Western came again by the left, via Thompson, Nelson’s strong shot going past. Even play followed till half-time. Bardsley, Lee, and Shaw put up a good performance in this spell. . In tho second spell play was fairly even, till Western attacked on the right, the ball being passed right across to Thompson on the left, whose shot went behind. School attacked, and soured a free-kick for hands just outside the area. Bardsley scored with a well-placed shot. _ School 2, Western 1. More even play, with Grant and Shanks prominent for School, and Bennett and Moore for Western. A splendid loft wing attack by Thompson was followed, by a fast centre from him, Chapman conceding a corner against School. School attacked, Grant leading, his centre going to Shanks, who put over. Western cam© at it again solidly, via Nelson and Thompson, Bardsley end Imrie relieving strongly. School attacked from a fine clearance by Imrie Reekie putting across a fine centre, in© referee, Mr T. Ruddiman, ruled offside, even though the ball was kicked well back, and a good School chance was spoiled Alternate attacks brought both goalies into action to clear well. School attacked stronglv, securing two corners, but the dofence g of Moorhouse, Shaw, and Bennett was sound. Western relieved, Thompson and Nelson attacking strongly, Ruffell and Bards lev being prominent in defence with Imrie. Two Western shots went over. _ Give-and-take play followed, good shots being put in by X,o(f for Western. The game continued fast and well balanced until the call of time leaving School victors in an interesting and strenuous game by two goals to one. On the School side. Grant and. Notman in the forwards, Bardsley and Imrie, in the backs, were the outstanding players.
