HARD COURTS FINALS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, September 3P. In the hard court finals at Rochuinpton, Miss M'Kano beat Mrs Peacock, o—l, I—o,1 —0, o—l. W. C. Crawley beat A. 11. Fyzcc, G —2, 2—C, 6—4.—A. and N.Z. Cable. OPENING OF THE SEASON Tho majority of tho lawn tennis dubs in and around Dunedin bold their official openings on Saturday afternoon in perfect weather. Consequently there was a large attendance of members and visitors, and much enthusiasm was displayed. Mr ®. N. Brown (president of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association), accompanied by Mr B. B. Conston (president of the Junior Association), visited six or seven of the courts and took part in tho formal ceremonies, being warmly received wherever they wont. Tho committee of the tennis section of tho North-East Valley Bowling and Tennis Club spared no effort in endeavouring to make tho afternoon’s sport as enjoyable as possible, and in this it succeeded admirably. Tire courts were engaged all tho time, each set of players being allowed a certain period for their game. In this manner everybody was given a chance, and a pleasant time was ensured. Mr J. Rhodes (president), in declaring the courts open for play, said that during tho winter a new court had been put down, and the old bowling pavilion bad been transferred to tho aide of tho tennis courts for tho use of tennis players. Ho hoped that it would not be long before more courts could bo laid down, and ho was euro that tin’s -would bo done as soon as tho membership showed a further increase. A social and dance was held in the new bowling pavilion in the evening. Tho floor was in excellent condition, and mmsic good. Songs werp contributed by Misses I. Christie and D. Carman and Mr A. Smith. Messrs G. Ansell and R, Taylor -sang a 'duet, and Mr J. Manson provided a violin solo. The members of the Arthur Street Tennis Club opened the season on Saturday. The president (Mr G. L. Scott) made a short opening speech, wishing the club a very successful season. After tho cantain (Mr P-tekea) and Miss Scott had played the first, ball over the net, the season was declared open. Afternoon tea was dispensed by tho lady members, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent in friendly games. The Cosy Dell Tennis Club held its official opening on Saturday, when a large number of members and their friends were present. During tho afternoon tho courts were visited by Mr S. N. Brown (president of the Otaoo Lawn Topnis Association) and Mr B. B. Conston (president of the Junior Association). Mr J. J. Clark, declared the courts open, and wished all members an enjoyablo and successful season. Mrs J. J. Clark then drove the first ball over tho net, and play was commenced, tho courts being fully occupied until dark. Afternoon tea was provided by tho ladies. During tho afternoon Mr Clark, on behalf of the members, presented Mr T. Deehan (who is leaving Dunedin shortly) with a small token of their esteem.
