THE FAR EAST
JAPAN’S ARMY
PROPOSED ECONOMY.
Pxcm Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. TOKIO, June 24. The War Office has completed the draft of the Army Bill, which is now before a military conference. It is expected that its adoption will be followed by its submission to the Cabinet for incorporation in the 1923-24 Budget. The total strength of the army will be reduced from 296,000 to 240,000, consisting of infantry 33,000, cavalry 3000, artillery 16,000, engineers, 4000. The total saving will be 23,000,000 yen. The. Diet’s recommendation that the Conscription term be cut from two years to 16 months is reflected in the service reduction of 40 days, which has been adopted. There is a strong sentiment in the nation for a much further reduction, which will be agitated for vigorously. The only hope for a much more material reduction rests on economic conditions during the coming six months, which may be so bad as to make further tax cuts imperative.— Reuter.
