MANCHESTER UNITY
The meeting nearest to Anzac Day in all lodges of the M.U. of Oddfellows is set aside for the purpose of paying loving tribute to Ihe memory of those brethren who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. Members of Loyal Valley foregathered in o-oodly numbers on the eve of Anzac Day for “this purpose. ' N.G. Bro. S. Urquhart presided, and having formally opened the meeting, proceeded to explain the origin of Anzac Day .and what is meant to all tffue Britishers,’ as a tribute to our heroic dead.. He asked the’ brethren to stand and face the lodge roll of honour while P.P.G.M. - Bro. Jas. Briggs sounded the “Last Post.” Later in the -evening P.G. Bro. W. J. Hutton read extracts from Masefield’s poli." The District Executive, represented by Prov. G.M. Bro. John Will and Prov. D.G.M. Bro. J. A. Robson, were received with customary honours, this being Bro. . Will’s first" iippearr.nce in the lodge since" his elevation to the G.M.’s chair. The N.G. extended fraternal greetings, and wished him a pleasant and profitable term of office. The Prov. G.M., in reply, thanked the lodge for its good wishes, and .urged members* to, do their bit in ’an endeavour to wain-tain the prestige of the M.U. N.G.'Bro. Rogers presided over the usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Hand and Heart’ Lodge. Anzac Day -was fittingly referred to. members standing in silence, facing the roll of honour for a short period in tribute to, their glorious dead. Prov. Treas/ Bro. A., delivered a short address relative to ' the” occasion. Quite recently this lodge received p fraternal visit from P.P.G.M, Bro. A. Stenm?son, of tile Wellington district. This brother was well received, and later in the evening delighted members with a recital o; some of his experiences in Oddfellowehip. The meeting of LoyM Albion, held' in commemoration of the sacrifices made in the Great War, was fairly yell attended. N.G. Bro. E/ Longworth presided, and addressed Hie meeting in wards, appropriate' to the occasion, relating briefly some of the main incidents of the Great War. Per Sec. Bro. Stabb made special reference to those who made (lie supreme sacrifice. Representatives o f Loyal Hand and Heart, Dunedin, and Milton lodges responded to the customary toast.
