The ordinary meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Hanover Street Baptist Church Bril yesterday afternoon. On the invitation of the president (Mrs ■’ Hiett), Mrs Lee Cowie, from Auckland,, conducted the devotional part of the meeting. In the course of her remarks she gave a most graphic and interesting description of the Mosque of Omar, which she had recently visited. She concluded her short address by giving a precis of the great loss sustained in every department of life through the sale of liquor, and encouraged members not to slacken in their efforts until “the plague was stayed from the Land.” . ,In connection with the hostel proposal, it was decided, to defer consideration -of any such home in the meantime. The chief business of the meeting was to hear a report from Mrs M’Cartney, a delegate to the Auckland convention. It was a clear, concise/ and comprehensive report of a aeries of meetings. Mr J. A. Young, M.P. for Waikato, sad said that the importance of the gathering justified a civic reception. He had also said that li£ had been impelled to take up his stand for pro-, hibition, as he was convinced that a sober people was the beat able to meet national adversity. A most interesting feature of the convention was the presence of six Maori delegates, one of whom hod prayerfully and almost tearfully begged the convention to do its utmost to prevent the sale of drink amongst their beloved people in the King Country. They sang to the assembled members in their native tongue and led the devotions at one of the meetings. On the. last diy of the convention a letter was received from the Mayor of Hamilton thanking the iconvention for the moral uplift which had been given to the district by the holding of the meetings, and for the decisive stand taken by them on public questions.
