GENERAL TOWNSHEND
A PASSPORT WITHHELD. PROTESTS IN THE COMMONS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 1. (Received May 2, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr James Parker (a junior Lord of the Treasury), in the House of Commons, informed General Townshend that the latter had been refused a passport to Turkey because the Government thought that General Townshend’s presence in Turkey would be misinterpreted by France, Greece, and Turkey, and would be prejudicial to the peace negotiations. Several members protested against a member of the House of Commons being refused a passport because he happened to disapprove of the Government’s policy. General Townshend expressed his determination to question Mr Chamberlain (Leader of the House of Commons) later.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
