Minor clashes occurred with the police, who lined the route. (Received May 2, at 5.5 p.m.) The May “Day meetings proved a fiasco owing' to heavy rain. The Government, by a clever ruse, prevented the interruption of the public services, while satisfying the Labour extremists by offering a holiday, but adding that they would not be paid, and that it would be part of their annual holiday. The result was that there were practically no applications for absence from duty. The school children were also offered a holiday if they brought a letter from their parents.
