UNIVERSITY SPORT. ATHLETICS AND BOXING. (From Onm Own t 'obrtbpondknt.) LONDON, March 14. In the first heat of the 100 Yards in tho Cambridge University sports, K. ' R. J. Saxon (Nelson and Emmaneul) was the victor, by barely a foot, in 10 4-ssec, G. G. Henderson (City of London and St. Catherine’s) being defeated. H. W. Sadlier (Nelson and Emmanuel) was competing in the second heat, but came in third. In the finals Saxon was defeated by G. M. Butler (Harrow and Trinity), who led from the start and pro-'-'d to he the winner by 4ft; half a yard separated the second and- third. Time, 10 l-ssoc The Long Jump was won by Saxon (21ft lOin), with E. L. Levennstein (Charterh >use and Pembroke) second (21ft 3Jin). In the annual boxing contest Cambridge beat Oxford by six events to one. W. S. F. Johnston (Now Zealand and Wadham) entered in the bantams, but was defatted easily on points by D. R. P. Clark (Downing, Cambridge, and an Old Blue). Pembroke won the final of the Ci nder Pours at Cambridge , defeating King’s by 1 3-ssec, in the excellent time of 7min 35 2-ssec. The conditions were ideal, and the winners came very near to the record set up by Peterhouse in 1899, who won the race on that occasion in 7min 32Scc. Pembroke made a very good start, and took the lead quite early on. King’s rallied at Grassy, and improved their position, but Pembroke again wont ahead and kept there, though at the finieh there was less than a length between them. A New Zealander on the winning side was A. M. Allen (cox), King's College, Auckland, now a Cambridge student. LAWN TENNIS. Tho C Grade lawn tennis competition was concluded on Saturday afternoon. Cosy Doll defeating St. Clair in the final. This is the third year in succession that Cosy Dell ha« won this competition. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. Tho Portobello Miniature Rifle Club held its usual shooting competition on Saturday last. Tho weather was perfect, and some good shooting resulted, H Allan 34, 34, and 33, and W. G. Smith- 35, 35, and 31—total, 101 each—standing .out by themselves. The ranges were SO, 100, and 150 yards. The following were the scores: —H. Allan 101. W. G. Smith 101, J, J. M’Cartney 92, J. The Council of tho New Zealand Golf Association definitely decided to-night that the championship tournament, to be held at Palmerston North, should commence on Monday, September 11. As regards qualifying for the amateur championship, it was decided that the whole of the four rounds of the open championship should also be qualifying rounds for the amateur championship, the beet 16 to qualify, all games in the playoff to be 36 holes. The entries for the amateur championship are to be strictly limited to 64, and no competitor whose middle handicap is more than eight may enter. LAWN TENNIS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Opyrisrht SYDNEY, May 1. (Received May 1, at 9.10 p.m.) Aitken was the only New Zealander in action at the tennis carnival who received a forfeit in the singles match. Ho lost hia doubles with Graham against Anderson and Spratt, 6—B, 4—6, 6—2, 6—7. Aitken failed to dovetail with his partner’s play, but was responsible for the lion’s share of the work. He has not yet struck form, but he excelled in driving and smashing. The vectors’ play was characterised by steadiness. Anderson is a brother of the Davis Cup representative.
