ST. KILDA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last evening, thege being present—the Mayor (Mr J. W. Dove), Crs Teller, Garbutt, Carol in, Sneddon, Stenhouse, Adam, Ritchie, and Mercer. The Mayor mentioned that the town clerk (Mr Griffin), who had had a very strenuous time, could not possibly attend the meeting, but with a little attention and care he might be about next month. He moved a vote of sympathy with Mr Griffin in his illness.—The motion was carried. The Acting Town Clerk submitted a report on the light situated-at the corner of Victoria and Bowen streets. He was of the opinion that the only beneficial alteration that could be made in the lighting was at the corner of Royal orescent and Bowen streits.—lt was resolved that the electrio light be removed from the corner of Bowen street and Royal crescent to Chisholm’s corner; and the gas lamp in Bowen street be removed to the corner of Quarry and Bowen streets. | A communication was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs in re certain moneys which the council desired to bo treated as an antecedent liability under the provisions of the Local Bodies Finance Act. 1921-22. It whs stated in the letter that the Minister hud given the matter careful consideration, and the question seemed to be one between the council and the bankers. If the bank was prepared to certify the amount in question as owing on the overdraft to the bank on March 31 jt could be accepted as an antecedent, liability under the provisions of the Act.—A letter was-also received from Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., on the subject, Mr Sidey pointing out that under special circumstances th© bank might be able to certify as was desired.—The Mayor explained that the Minister recognised the justice of the council’s claim. Unfortunately he (the Mayor) was not in a position to fullv discuss th© position that evening owing to the absence of the town clerk, who was on sick leave. If the council gained its point it would greatly improve the position this year.—The letters were received, Mir Sidey to be thanked for the attention he had given to the affairs of the borough. The Town Clerk, Dunedin, forwarded a resolution passed by the Drainage Board at its last meeting, fixing the sewerage rates in the board’s area for the year ending March 31, and asked the council to take the necessary steps to lew and collect the pate. —Received. , The Secretary of the St. Kilda Fire Brigade wrote inviting the councillors to attend a social gathering to be held at the Fire Brigade station on May ll.—The invitation was accepted. It was resolved that in the event of the Drainage Board connecting mud tanks with the existing storm water drains in Moreau street, the oormcil would indemnify the Drainage Board against any lees which may arise. •
