'The letter, .which was a lengthy one, concluded: “The Government would be apprcached with a request that as the County Council failed to maintain our roads we are willing to maintain them ourselves for the rates we have at present to pay to maintain roads for the non-development, non-settlement, but the expensive luxurious motor ear and its wily occupant. —Surfaceman to be put on the road for a few days. The State Forest Service, Tapamu, wrote regarding the advisability of planting trees to provide timber for the council s use in v-ears to come. — , The schedule of allocation, as submitted bv the engineer, for expenditure on the main roads for the period .ending March 31, 1923, was approved, this being on a £6OOO basis. _ .. , , The Waihemo County Council asked support. to the following motion:— that the council was of opinion that the auditing of hospital boards’ accounts should be performed free by the Government Audit Department.—Received. F and B M'Rae, Sutton, drew attention to the state of the road leading through section 1. block XI. Strath-Taicn district.— Engineer to inspect. , ~ W. Dodd (Moonlight) applied for attention to road leading into his property.—EnglTikoy,° and Wilson. East, Taieri. applied for permission to drive a tunnel under the road at the coal mine, which was being worked on the ground recently, held by Mr .Tames Gracio. There was 50ft of covering on top of the coal.—Granted on usual conditions. , Thomas Carm thers. Middleman'll, ap; peared before the council with a request to insert three culverts and erect a small bridge on Top road, Middlemarch. This would, he said, serve some 10 ratepayers.— Cr Matheson explained that funds would not permit of the improvements to Kidd's road and this road also, unless the rates were increased, and the'riding fund could not now bo overdrawn, as vyas the case previously.—Mr Carruthers said he would continue to give permission for another year to Mr Kidd to use a roadway through his property, and thus there would be no necessity to proceed meantime with the improvements to Kidd’s road.—lt was therefore agreed that if Mr Carruthers would give that undertaking, and the settlers concerned were agreeable, the improvements to Kidd's road'would stand over till funds were available. and the culverts, etc., asked for by Mr Carruthers bo inserted on. Tcp road. C. Paterson, Macraes Flat, wrote regarding the licensing of hawkers, pedlar*, and travellers.—To lie on the table for one month.

Carruthers’ property for the purpose of crossing sheep, provided that some assistance was given with the horse work.
