SOUTH ISLAND DAIRY ASSOCIATION

DISPOSAL OF BUTTER AND CHEESE. QUESTION OF A COMPULSORY POOL. , ■ An extraordinary ger. -al meeting of the South Island Dairy Association wa* held yesterday morning for the purpose of discussing the possibility of establishing a compulsory pool to hai die the whole of the export of butter and cheese. Mr J. R. Thacker occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of members of the association. The meeting, which was not open to tbp press, lasted all day. Most of the argument revolved round the . point whether the pool should be a dominical pool or a separate North Island and South Island pool. A motion was moved by Mr Agar as follows:—“That this meeting is of opinion that an improved system of marketing _is not only desirable, but necessary in the interests of dairy producers, but is of opinion that a dominion pool is undesirable, - and that the interests of the South Island oan b© served best by a South Island pool of all dairy produce and that we offer to co-operate with the North both here and in London, but insist upon retaining con-. trol of our produce.” Mr Parker moved as an amendment—. “That in the opinion of this meeting a dominion pool is a very desirable thing.” The mover said that his intention was that tile scheme should be e compulsory ecbeme. On a ballot being taken the amendment was carried by 45 votes to 41. * On the amendment being put .as the motion another ballot was called for. This . resulted in the motion being lost by 45 votes to. 44. The business was thus left in the air, so to speak. Mr Bowman then moved and Mr Agar seconded—“ That a committee of five be set up to meet delegates from the North Island and discuss all the phases of the pool and report to the annual meeting of the association.” The motion was carried. * Mr Hansen moved —“That the committee be composed of the executive of the association, in conjunction with its secretary.” Mr. Bowman moved as an amendment—- “ That two representatives of the cheese factories and two representatives of the butter factories, with the chairman of the association, be the conuaittee.” The amendment was carried. Mr Bowman moved that the committee be as follows:—Messrs Thacker, Middleton, Grieve. Fleming, and-. Agar. ’ ■ ' Middleton, “Fleming and Grieve (members of the executive) declined nomination. Messrs Cartwright. Smith, and Bowman were then nominated, and completed the committee required.
