HIGH SCHOOLS' BOARD

U l6 regular meeting of the Otago High Schools Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Dr G. E. Thompson (in ™ chair), Dr Fulton, Messrs T. K. Sidey, I: Gallaway, J. C. Stephens, • B- Brugh. H. Webb, and the Hon. D. 1. Fleming. J ho Rector of the Boys’ High -School reported as follows for the month:—“l have to report- that the total number of Wvs at present upon the school roll is 582, of whom 154 are seniors, 376 juniors, and 52 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for the past five years; April, 19171922, are respectively 443, 462, 492, 490, and 531. I have to thank a number of old boys at the school at Invercargill for the gift through Mr T. D. Pearce. M.A.. of a valuable bat for presentation to Stuart F. Duncan in recognition of bis score of 98 in the . cricket match against . the Southland Boys’ High School. The pres ntation was kindly made by Mr.E. Webster, president of the Old Boys’ • Society, on April 7. I have pleasure in noting the successes achieved by various members of oar staff m last year’s Degree examination. Messrs O. J. Bcgg and A. T. M'Nauglitpn obtained first class honours in history and in Latin and English respectively; Air E. M. Christie, M.Sc;, with second class honours in chemistry; Mr D. W. Faigan, M.A.. with second class honours in English and French; and Messrs R. W. S. Dotting and A. J. Gillnmn the Degree of B.A. In conclusion I wish to express our sincere sympathy 1 with two of our master, Messrs Arthur and Malcolm- Watt in the great loss they have suffered by the recent death of their father, the Rev. Michael Walt, D.D. —The report was received. 'ihe Lady Principal reported that between March 1 and April 20 eight pupils had withdrawn "from the effective roll number. During the same period five entries bad been made by new pupils; four junior and one senior free place. The effective roll stood at 449, the figures for 1921 being 393, for 1920. 349, and for 1919, 379. Misses London and Lawson had entered upon their duties, and a new classification adopted provided for courses as follows: —With a view to University Scholarship, with; a view to matriculation and higher leaving certificate, and with a view to matriculation and a certificate which might be issued by the school for proficiency in shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, and office method. These courses might be adapted to the needs of pupils desiring to enter upon nursing, dentistry. or home science work, as well as teaching and office work. There had been begun the development of and art craft work for past matriculation pupils with taste and talent for these studies. Miss Loudon had -undertaken the work of organising sports mistress, with Miss Campbell as senior adviser, various other members of the staff assisting.—Received. The Education Department wrote that it regretted it could not at present add to the circular in re iiability for accidents to pupils and teachers. The question of. indemnifying boards against loss had been

considered, but, at present, the -Government was not prepared to assume responsibility.— Received. The secretary intimated that, in consequence of a letter from the department as to whether all teachers had taken the oath of allegiance, all teachers ■ had taken the oath as required by Section 11, Education Act, 1921-22.—-Received. Mr B. B. C’ouston wrote mentioning that he had undertaken the supervision of the formation of three tennis courts at the Girls’ High School, and offered his services as acting hon. engineer.—Received -with thanks. The resignations of Messrs E. M. Christie, M.Sc., and M. F. Peake, assistant masters in the Boys’ High School were accepted with regret. The hoard decided to endorse the application of Mr H. W. Slater, M.A., B.Sc., for an exchange of position with a teacher from Great Britain, conditionally. A special committee of the board submitted draft regulations for the award of the General Harry Fulton Memorial Scholarship. It was decided to refer the draft regulations to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade Trustees for. their approval.
