OVERSEAS CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT. The following are the principal point* in the annual report of The Overseas Club which deals with the meetings and events or the club’s tenth tear: Mrs Baker resigned from the executive during the year, and the executive desires^ to place on record its appreciation of her work. The executive has endeavoured to cater for members by arranging with several leading citizens to give short lecturee on matters of Imperial interest, and we regret that a large number of members on these occasions have not taken advantage of the privileges of attending these lecturee. The lectures were given with the idea of fostering! a spirit of inquiry into vital plfcblems connected with our Empire, and we trust that the whole of the members will take advantage of them in the future. The executive is specially indebted to the Rev. Mr Axelsen, Rev. Mr Gray Dixon, Messrs James Begg. G. M'Cracken, J. B. Waters, and Colonel M'Don&ld for their excellent addresses. The function arranged for Empire Day in the Octagon Hall was a magnificent success, and the executive trusts that in future this day will bo observed by the club as an annual fixture. A new lease for the term of three years has been entered into with the Dunedin Building Company (Limited) at a rental of £l7O per annum The ladies connected with the Mercantile Marine Circle have done extremely good work in entertaining officer* from the various shipo that have been in port, and the officers have expressed their very high appreciation of the plaasant evenings tendered to them, many of them having joined the club as a mark of their gratitude. The ladies have reorganised their circle, and have done excellent work in connection with the:r social evenings. They have also submitted a design for a memorial to our soldier members which has been approved by the executive, and they propose to have this erected during the year. The hon. secretary (Mir Fairbairn) has submitted an excellent report in connection with the club’s future propaganda for increasing its aims and objects by donating prizes to the various schools for essays on Imperial topics,' uni also for extending its usefulness and' milking it an educative factor in the community. The executive has expressed its approval of his report. The executive expresses its very high appreciation of Mr Fairbairn’s excel-' lent services and the amount of energy anal enthusiasm displayed by him in carrying oni the duties- entrusted to him. Liabilities amounting to over £9OO were taken over from last year, and it is extremely eafiafketory to note that after payment of these we close the year with a credit balance. The report also comments on a successful “at home” to the officers of the French wap sloop Aldebaran, the ball in honour of the Springbok footballers, and an entertainment which was organised by Mir De Sponginoii of the unemployment relief fond, and, which resulted in £4B 19s being raised for die purpose.
