THE MEAT POOL.

COLLECTION OF EXPORT LEVY. POSITION CI/EARLY DEFINED. (Pm United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 25. In reference to the Press Association message from (Jhristchurch saying that Sir Francis Boys had complained that the freezing companies had never been consulted as to the manner in which the meat pool levy was to be collected the comment upon the statement by the Meat Producers’ Board is as follows : ’’The remark quoted is ingenuous. The collection of a levy on the meat exported from New Zealand is provided for in the Meat Exporter Control Act of which all the managers of freezing companies and meat exporters have copies. Th/a Act provides that all moneys payable under this section in respect of any meat shall be paid to the Collector of Customs on or before the eptry of that meat for export. This should be sufficiently plain and busi-ness-like for any exporter. Undoubtedly the levy will be borne by the producers, and so far as all the meat exported is concerned it will be willingly borne, but the producers resent the attempt of the buyers to collect the levy on meat used for local consumption.” SHEEP OWNERS TO ALLOW FOR LEVY. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has expressed the opinion to the Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Union that there is no justification for buyers deducting the Meat Pool levy from their invoices. The proper course is for them to make allowance for it in fixing their limits.
