LAKE COUNTY A. AND P. SOCIETY

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SHOW, The fourteenth annual show of tho Lake Comity A. and P. Society, which took place at Lake Hayes on Thursday, was tho most Biiccesoful ever held under the auspices of the society. Indeed, in practically every respect it eclipses all previous records. Iho entries showed a phenomenal increase, the standard of quality was much higher, and the attendance signified a widened interest in the welfare of the organisation. The weather was not verv favourable, aa rain fell oft’ and on till well after midday, hut tho sun shone out in the afternoon and made things pleasant for everyone concerned. In the sheep sections there were some very fine entries. Speaking of the Romney Marsh lot, the judge, Mr D. S. Middleton (Lowburn), said they would do immense credit to any district. All these wore shown by Messrs Wm. Paterson and Son, “Ayrburh.” In addition to scoring the champion card for a two-shear ram in this section, this enterprising firm scored champion honours in their halfbreds, which were a splendid lot. Their two ram lambs were a fine example of what can be accomplished with perseverance and good judgment. Merinos were rather a poor entry in point ot numbers, but Fhe judge admired Paterson and Son’s champion ram exceedingly, Tile Corricdalcs were an average lot, with tho exception of Mr W . S. Reid a champion ewes (over 20 months). Messrs Edie Bros., Edievale, had a big entry of crossbreds, and in the shape of wins they put up a record, securing 12 firsts and a second out of 13 entries. All the fat sheep forward, remarked the judge, were gin exceptionally fine lot, and .Edio Bros, prizewinners (butchers’ weights), he added, were good enough for any show in the dominion. Mr Leo Lee was close up with a number of seconds. There was no entry of Border Leicesters. The cattle sections were fairly well filled, the Jerseys being the best, and the honours were pretty well shared by Messrs D. Barron, W. Brown, and Messrs W. Pnd and’ Sons. The champion card for best cattle beast in the show went to Mr R. W. Gilmour’s cow, which was described by the judge, Mr W. Kirkland, of East Taieri, as a real good beast. The draught Horses were a creditable collection, Mr T. Houston's animal deservedly claiming the championship. In the thoroughbreds A. M’Bride’s winning dry mare was a good representative of the class, having plenty of substance. There was little competition here amongst tlie fillies and geldings, but in the hackneys they were a well-arown ring for their age. The judge, Mr S. F. Inder, Gore, considered that Messrs Churstain’s and T. Scott’s prizewinners were the makings of two good horses that should he heard of in the future. The haci~= constituted a good lot, though the 14-stone entries were a bit on the aged side. The judge found several in the 11-etone class unpaoed, the only really “educated” animals being the prize-takers. Speaking of the ladies’ hacks, he said the two winners were well handled by their riders. . . There was a large entry of dogs, but none of poultry. Pigs were only a spare entry. , The grain, seeds, and roots made an interesting display. The judge. Mr A. M‘Donald (Donald Reid and Son, Dunedin), spoke enthusiastically of many of the grain exhibits. The quality was uniformly good, and he hod some _ difficulty in separating some of the entries when making tho awards. He expressed disappointment that there was not more barley considering that Wakatipu has won fame m tho isast on its success in its growing of this cereal. The few samples shown were splendid and well-threshed. The favourableness of the season for root crops was reflected in the excellence and quality of the exhibits staged. Some of the potatoes would have been hard to beat, Mr John Gray’s “Up-to : dates” well deserving a first award. Being true to type and of good marketable size. The Aberdeen purplctop turnips shown by Mr P. Hansen, white carrots by Simson and Hamilton, and mangels by Mr J. P. Brown were quite outstanding. In the fruit section apples made a particularly fine show, nearly all the popular varieties being staged. Well-grown samples of Cox’s Orange, Jonathan, and Afriston wore prominent. Mr H. Angelo, Battery Hill, had in a splendid collection of sorts. The dairy produce and culinary exhibits were described by the judge. Miss KcmpghaJl, as of a very high standard, as she had no easy task in making tho awards. Competition was large and keen, and representative of the length and breadth of the district. The M'Kibbin TamTly. of Crown Terrace, who are usually large prize-takers, again figured prominently in the honours list. _ # . The competitions, which are quite an important feature of show, provided much to interest and amuse old and young, while a sheep weight-guessing played no insignificant part in the day’s programme. The remarkable success of tho show may be attributed in no small degree to tbe untiring energy, industry, and enterprise of tho society’s officials, all of whom were determined to make it worthy of Wakatipu. It must indeed have been a source of gratification to them and of pride to everyone present that the district could support such an ambitious undertaking as Thursday’s show. Tbo fudges were all agreed that abundant evidence was given of what the district can rear and produce namely, much that is second to none In the dominion. In Messrs Leo l*ec (president), W. S. Reid (vice-president), and B. Tobin the society have officors-benrers who are indefatigable workers, and they will all be ready to admit that the class stewards and other fellow enthusiasts gave them a very loyal and strong backing. It is a matter tor congratulation that the choice of judges was a very happy one, as they gave universal satisfaction. Appended is tho puze list: HORSES. Judge; Mr T. Carruthers, Middlomarch.
