EXPRESS TRAIN SERVICE
“A VERY HIGH AUTHORITY’S” HINT’. CFboii Otjb Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, March 23. Mr F. Harwell (town clerk of Invercargill) told a meeting of the Southland League last night that he had received a broad hint froip “a very high authority” that Southland should guard its interests in connection with the through express-from Invercargill to Christchurch as Dunedin was exerting ceaseless pressure in Wellington to have the service changed. The information, although he could not disclose its source, was no rumour, and it treated of an imminent danger. Mr A. W. Rodger said that the congestion on the express from norCh of Dunedin was so great that some alteration in the service would have to be made, but that was no reason why Southland should suffer. It was decided to write to the Borough Council and the Chamfer of Commerce, and to the Christchurch public bodies, us well as the Canterbury Progress League, asking that a close watch be kept, and immediate steps taken to oppose any move on the lines suggested. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce has also been advised of a rumoured curtailment by the Gore Chamfer, and has moved in the matter.
