MOSGIEL DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
The monthly meeting was held last evening, Mr H. Millar presiding, A circular letter from the board advised the committee that while it was open to it to expend such sums as had been raised locally and constituted voluntary contributions it should not commit itself to any expenditure on the assumption that the whole,'or any portion of tho subsidy, would be immediately forthcoming, as the department might require to defer payment until such time and in such amounts as tho financial position allowed-
Some correspondence was before the committee showing that the Minister of Education had reconsidered his decision to withdraw the concessions for conveyance and boarding allowances to pupils attending the secondary departments of District High Schools, and that these allowances would be continued till further notice. It would bo necessary shortly to go into the whole question of payment® for conveyance of pupils and in that connection the payments referred to might have again to be reviewed. Miss Winifred Snell was appointed to the vacancy of assistant on the school staff. Final arrangements were made for the school picnic which will be held at Evansdale on the 10th inst. The Railway Department notified that the train will stop at the Township station and at Dunedin. Messrs Sproule and Roberts’s tender was accepted for kalsomining the interior walls of three rooms.
It was decided to open the school on February 7, and to advertise the fact. Both secondary and primary departments promise to be well-attended this year, and the committee hopes that parents will send their senior children to the former and partake of the value of such an institution in their midst. All the facilities 1q be obtained at city schools are available, and this without the inconvenience of travelling io and frpm the city by train.
