NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 31. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute is being held to-day. Professor Kostertield, of CawthoTO Institute, in the presidential address, dwelt upon the need -of more co-operation among New Zealand scientific men in the interests of scientific research. He trusted that the institute would be able to co-operate with the American National Research Council upon certain problems of the Pacific Ocean. It was difficult to see how great progress in the matter of organisation of researches could be made without financial assistance, and it would ’certainly appear that the time had come for some complete change of policy in New Zealand owing to the changed financial situations. It was worth while asking the various societies affiliated for a suggestion as to how best to foster research spirit. The Standing Committte reported that letters had been received asking the institute to take into consideration the advisability of inviting the Pan-Pacifio Congress to meet in New Zealand in 1923. Alter an interview with Ministers, and the receiving of other communications the Standing Committee considered that the meeting of the Pan-Pacifio Congress should be held in the dominion, provided the Government was not called upon to pay any of the expenses beyond those necessary _ for printing, in connection with the meeting. Dr Chilton gave a resume" of the business transacted at last congress.

The opinion was expressed that the Government could not see its way to have the congress in the dominion. Dr Tillyard said the Government oould not finance it.

A resolution favouring the holding of the congress in New Zealand was passed and a oommitttee waa appointed to deal with the matter. ~-
