INVERCARGILL, January 28. * -The ojmual ■ race ; between Otago and Southland for the Edmond ' Shield, ■which, was-hold to-day. resulted in an easy win for Otago. 'When the crews took the water a breeze made the surface _just sufficiently rough to test the oarsmanship of the crews. Otago was represented by Nelson (stroke), R. Connor, J. Oolthorpe, and A. Glengarry (Port Chalmers)/ and Southland 'by < G.- G. Webb (stroke), T. Finlay. P. Bjeb,' and Gl 1 Munvo. ■v 1 ■ ■ ; .■' '■ ' • ' The boats were in perfect'lino when the .starters’ gun-sent the crews away oh their ■two-mile jolimey. Otago struck trouble, in the first- few lengths, and the ' Southland crew, who went away on ah ' eveh start, took the lead. Otago soon, settled down to an even 32, Southland starting at 38. Southland gradually reduced their stroke to 32, but they wore not 1 pulling With; the same precision as Otago, : whose- boat ' was ' moving along smoothly. Before half a mile' 'had been" covered Otago had wiped out the disadvantage of the start, and assumed command. From there the race was neVer in doubt. The Otago crew repeated; its victory of. two years ago'by' winning as it liked, and regained ' the shield, w'hioh was Won • by Southland oh Otago Harbour last year. ■ ’ : '• : ’ r '
