..The Southland St. Andrew’s Society held its annual Burns’ Night on Jandary 25. Tho meeting was held in the Stobo Hallj which was crowded to excess. The immortal memory was proposed by Rev. A. C. Wedderspoon, Invercargill. During the evening a handsome cheque was presented to the Rev, Robert Francis, Bluff, whose poems,have given great pleasure to bis Scottish compatriots. Mr J. L. M‘G. Watson, Dr William Stewart, and Revs. Collie and Wedderspoon testified to the interest Mr Francis’s poems had created, and the suggestion was made that tho society should publish a subscription edition of them. Tho Chief stated that Sir Harry Lauder had been so pleased with one of Mr Francis’s songs, which appeared in the Edinburgh Scotsman, that he had sent his thanks and photograph to tho poet, and said that he had set the verses to .music. At a gathering of residents of Palmerston held on January 18 Mr P. M'Carthy, of the Otago Centre of tho New Zealand Piping and Dancing Associotion, addressed the meeting m support of forming a sub-centre of the association in Palmerston and Wainemo. Mr M'Carthy outlined tho ' objects aimed at, and it was unanimously decided to form a sub-oentro. Mr A. S. Cambridge was elected to the chair, and the followin'' office-bearora were elected Patron. Mr James Ross; president Mr George Ross-vice-presidonts—Messrs E. H. Clark.
