ORPHANAGES BENEFIT

The committee appointed - by the Citizens’ Carnival Executive to control the “ Mardi Gras’’ on the Wednesday of Carnival Week met yesterday afternoon; present—the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs K. IJL Long lx, B. S. Irvin, It. Bcnncil, S. Dunkley, J. Goldsmid, H. Y. Fulton, and Major Lampen. Representatives wore in attendance from the Commercial Travellers, Athletic Association, and the Otago Motor Club'. Mr Slater (representing the Athletic Association) and Mr dial! id ay (of the Motor Club) stated that their portion of the programme was complete. Mr Goldsmid mentioned that the prizes for the trotting events had been donated by the Dunedin Jockey Club, the Forbury Fjirk Trotting Club, the Otago Hunt Club, the taxi-owners of the city stands, and the Licensed Victuallers’ Association After conferring with the representatives of the Commercial Travellers’ Association regarding their control of the side shows, it was decided that a sub-oom-mitbee, comprising Messrs Lough, Allen, Scott, Goldsmid, llalliday, and Slater, meet at noon to-day and draw up a time programme of the events (fo bo run at Forbury Park. ( Mr Lough reported that Mr W. F. James had agreed to run tho sweepstakes, and Mr George Davidson bad consented to control the gates. Mr S. Dunkley stated that he had waited on Mr J. H. Wnigth, manager of the Cooperative Fruit Growers of Otago, with regard to soliciting donations of fruit, with the result that a circular letter had been addressed to upwards of 300 members. Mr Dunkley also stated that Messrs Thomson and Co. had offered to provide all cordials for tho day free, Mr AT‘Kay ices, and Messrs Hudson and Co. ico cups. In connection with the promenade concert, to be held at the Drill Hall, the Mayor staled that ho had received advice that She members of the cruisers would be pleased to participate in a boxing contest Mr Isaacs, representing the Otago Boxing Association, said his association would bo pleased to arrange this portion of the programme. —It was agreed that the association should do so.
