OTAGO HOSPITAL BOARD

• The monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs W. E. S. Knight (chairman), W. T. Talboys, R. Templeton, J. Dove, A. F. Quelch, D. Larnach, R. A. Rodger, Dr Newlands, Mosdamos Jackson, Macfio, and Macdonald. ' . A letter was received from the Directorgeneral of Health stating that the claims of (the board for the payment of “service” patients in the Dunedin Hospital had been considered and that an arrangement satisfactory to the board had been come to. A report was received recommending Ihe remission of accounts due for maintenance in the Dunedin Hospital amounting to £271 18s 6d. —Approved. Tho Secretary reported that a legacy of £lO had been received 1 from the estate, of tho late Mr William Paterson. LETTER OF APPRECIATION. 6 A letter was received from the St. Hilda Borough Council expressing the council’s appreciation of the work of the board and also qf the member® of Parliament in getting a satisfactory arrangement made with the Government regarding tho sum of £14,000 required to b© paid to the South GMago Board under the terms of tho Hospital .Commission’s report. The'Government has agreed to pay a subsidy; of £7OOO, so ..that the Otago Board • will now have to find only £7OOO. : The Chairman said that it-was very, pleasring ’to’ havo > such recognition';* He moved that the 'thanks of the board. to Dr; Now • lands, Mr A. F. Quelch, and the secretary(Mr Jacobs) he recorded on ,the minutes for the excellent work they had done as a deputation to Wellington in connection with the matter. Stewart, Messrs Sidey and Kellctt, M.P.’s, and tho other members of Parliament for the assistance they had given to the board in combating the chum For the payment of £14,000. ; The motion was carried unanimously. ' ' EXTENSIVE BREAKAGES. In connection with the Hofepital Committee’s report,. Mrs Macdonald a?kcd for a return of breakages or. crockery for each month. She pointed out that last month the amount involved was £59; this month it was only £37. She considered that £59 was a rather large amount. The secretary wa® instructed to submit a return ai asked for. ; • INCREASE OF WAGES. Mr Quelch presented a supplementary report from the Finance Committee embodying increases in the salaries of various members of the board’s staff. Ho said that at a time -like the present people might wonder why the -board should increase salaries at all. It had been found, how ever, that anomalies existed, some officers receiving less than those under them. Tho other increases were in relation to juniors No wages had been reduced, and no hand® were being put off in tho meantime. Mrs Jackson mentioned one officer whose work, she considered, deserved recognition by an increase of salary. Mr Talboys said the whole matter had been thoroughly considered by the committee, which was practically unanimous in regard to the recommendations. Mr® Jackson moved that the report he referred back to the committee to see whether an increase could not be made 'o the member of the clerical staff’referred., to. Mis Macfie seconded tho motion. The motion was defeated, and the report adopted. '' ' Mr Quelch pointed out that the total increases amounted to less than £2OO a year. SPLINT WORKSHOP. A special committee recommended that the board should take over tho splint workshop; Dunedin, Hospital, a® from March 1. 1922, and pay a sura not exceeding £IOO for plant, ate., as recommended % the engineer and controller of stores, at valuation to be arranged by tho department’s accountant and controller of stores. Certain conditions were embodied in the report.— The report was adopted.
