HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER

GOVERNMENT AND DUNEDIN CITY COUNCIL. It waa reported in tho Otago Daily Times yesterday that the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, had said :n Parliament, in reply to a question by Mr T. K. Sidey, that about a week ago he had sent a communication to the town clerk incorporating practically the whole of the negotiations between the Government and the Dunedin City Council in regard to the supply of hydro-electric power. Mr Coates said that he first of all telegraphed hoping for a reply at once, and had followed the telegram up With a letter, but since then he had not had any confirmation of the negotiations. He did not anticipate any difficulty,, and he believed that a mutual arrangement would be agreed to. While Mr Coates quite rightly asserts that there should be no difficulty in arriving at a satisfactory arrangement between the Government and the Dunedin City Council in regard to the supply of hydro-electrio power,-we are informed that he is in error in attributing any delay to the City Council. Cr Shacklock, chairman of tbe Electric Power and Lighting Committee of the City Council;-informed a Daily Times reporter yesterday that all tbe correspondence received from the' Government had been answered, and that a telegram had been forwarded ■ to the Minister’s department last Thursday morning. The check book of the City Council showed that the telegram was sent on that day. Cr Shacklock went on 10 say that his committee had endeavoured all along to prevent any delay in pushing on the negotiations to a definite conclusion. The arrangement with the Government is in connection with an extensive supply of hydro-electric power from Lake Coleridge to the- various towns southward to .Gore. Under this arrangement tho Lake Coleridge power will bo augmented in Dunedin by turning, in power from the Waipori plant. The terms will be satisfactory to the city of Dunedin. Thfe payment for the use of the power will be on a percentage basis, but the city wiH, not make a large profit on the transaction. The city Electric Power Committed had _cut the profit down to tho last possible limit, for'the sake of benefiting the districts which will be served by tho 'power. Questioned whether DnnWdin could spare power from Waipori, Cr Shacklock .said that there would bo more than enough power for the city’s requirements as soon as the new generator ordered could be installed. When this now generator had been put in another one would probably have to be purchased. Another pipe to carry water from' the penstock at the mouth of the tunnel was to bo, installed at Waipori, and it would supply sufficient water to drive the two new generators. Each generator would provide '3OOO kilowatts—or 6000 kilowatts in all. The present power of 6000 kilo- . watts would therefore bo doubled. Cr Shaddock said that he hoped to get authority at tho meeting of the council next Wednesday to make a start with the new pipe. There ore at the present time three -iw «u.nr>lving water to the power house at Waipori. GOVERNMENT SCHEMES. TENDERS ACCEPTED. (Pkb Ukxtf.d Paras Asbooiattou.) , WELLINGTON, January 26.
