FIRE AT TE AWAMUTU
WOODEN BLOCK IN FLAMES. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE REPORTED. (Peb United Pbess Association.) TE AWAMUTU, January 26. Fire broke out at 11 o’clock last night in a large wooden block of shops and offices opposite the post office. Fanned by a strong easterly gale the flames spread quickly. For nearly an hour the brigade fought to check their spread, and ultimately succeeded in confining the damage done to one end of tho block. Mr Oliphant and Mr Swarbrick (solicitors) were burnt out; Brown (saddler) and Tucker Bros, (tobacconists) had their premises partly burnt; Goodall’s (mercery and boots) stock was soaked with water and the premises of Vile (saddler), Ingham (fruiterer), Clark (storekeeper), Leo (jeweller) and the Piccadilly Dining Rooms were damaged by water. The fire was mainly in the solicitors’ offices and the roof of tho building. _ The buildings were owned by Mr C. B. Smith and it is understood wore insured in the State Office, Other insurances are unknown.
