SIDELIGHTS ON THE WAR
THE GERMAN HIGH COMMAND. A LUNCHEON CONVERSATION. Proas Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. , PARIS, January 24. Le Matin’s representative interviewed the ex-Empress Zita at Bordeaux. The ex-Empress recalled having had luncheon with > the German Admiral Holtzendorff during the war. The latter was certain that the submarines would bring England to her ‘knees in 1917. Ex-King Karl (her husband) strongly opposed submarine warfare. • Some months later, when Marshals Hindenburg and Ludendorff were dining with Zita, the latter asked Hindenburg; “Well, is England on her knees?” Hindenburg, who was courteous, replied philosophically that war was an affair in which one often deceived oneself; “but,” added Zita, “ Ludendorff was so angry that I chanced the conversation.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
