next trial race at end of WEEK. CONDITIONS OF THE CONTEST. An extraordinary degree of interest is being manifested by local yachtsmen in tne ■ 'orthcoming contest by 14-ft one-design achts for the possession of the Sanders Memorial Cup. which is at present held by Otago. Challenges have been entered by Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Southland, and the series of deciding races has been provisionally set to be sailed on Otago Harbour between February 4 and February 11 (Carnival Week). Wellington will.be represented by Lord Jclhcoe's Iron Duke, Canterbury by Mr Miller's Linnet, Southland by Messrs Bragg and Co’s Murihiku. and Auckland and Otago by bouts which have yet to be selected The local position is that two races have been 'sailed, and Mr W. J. P. M‘Culloch’s Heather, which last year brought the oup to Dunedin after defeating the Iron Duke in Auckland, has won them both. At theend of the present week the third race will be sailed, and should the winner of this ' race be other than the Heather the success--1 ful boat will sail off against her in a fourth trial. Should the Heather again lose, a fifth and final trial will be necessary If the Heather wins the third race she will become the defending boat. The nine vessels competing in this event are all in readiness for the contest which is to be sailed over the Ravensboume course, and it is expected to be one of the keenest races evpr sailed in the Otago Harbour. The defending boat has to be nominated by January 14. The following conditions have, been drawn tip to govern the interprovincial contest:— 1. A series of three races will be held in which all the challengers and the defender, will sail. 2. The winner of each race will compete in the finals, and the boat winning three races will be the winner of the cup. 3. In ascertaining the number of _ races won by any boat each win, whether in the series or in the finals, shall count. In the event of one boat winning two races in the series only the boat winning the third race of the series shall compete, against her in the finals. As regards the course to be sailed and the times, the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association is leaving these matters in abeyance until a conference can be arranged with, the other provincial representatives prior to the contest, so that they may be consulted before a decision is reached.
