THE FUNDS EXHAUSTED. The first meeting of the Unemployment Committee for the year, held yesterday morning, wot attended by the Mayor (Mr J. S.' Douglas), in the chair, Messrs O. Todd, J. B. Shaddock, J. Wilson. J. H, Hancock, J. B. Waters, C. Speight, J. Haymes, and th© Rev.. V. G. B. King. - i A statement of receipts and expenditure showed a total expenditure of £3766 Is 4d including £3626 2s lOd on wages. There was a balance of £IBB 14« 3d owing agqinst the council’s loan of £6OO. The Mayor submitted a minute dealing with the whole position of financiol stringency and unemployment. He suggested that an appeal be made to employers and employees to co-operate to enable relief works to be carried on at reduced rates' of pay. The executive fully discussed the minute, and decided to continue its appeal for funds. In the meantime in the ■ absence of funds all relief works must be temporarily closed » down, but as soon as funds become available the whole position will be reconsidered. ■ It was pointed out by several that a large amount of harvesting and other farm work will be available almost immediately, and that many of the unemployed should have little difficulty now in securing remunerative work in the country., Every effort must be mode, however, to prepare for hard times in the winter. ’ The committee recorded its very sincere thanks to the Rev.
