The Conner says: Only 17 out of a membership of 128 attended the mooting called for Saturday evening Last to consider the financial position, of the club. All members had been circularised with a printed form asking for their opinion, and whether they were prepared to sign a bond. Only two replied—one-a resignation, and the other a negative. Mr Alex., M’lntyro (president) was in the chair, and said there was some doubt as to whether they could finance the stakes, and ho asked for an expression of, opinion. The club was £2OO behind, that amount having been advanced by tho Metropolitan Club. They had not been asked to pay any interest, but according to the rules they were supposed to repay the loan. The secretary had received.the totalisator permit, and no mention had been made of the new totalisator building required. The secretary submitted a. rough, statement, made out on last voar’a business, showing that, with the some amount invested, a profit of £3O should result. Mr F. Lischnev moved that tho club close down. It was all very well to say have races, but who was going to give a guarantee ? Ho for one was not prepared to. It was bettor to doe© down now and realise on the property. Tho club bad had a miserable existence for- the past 20 years. If there was any hope of ooming out ho would bo perfectly -willing to carry on, but be saw no chance of doing any better,, and thought if they raced this year they were likely to go down £3OO or £4OO. Mr R. A. Rodger seconded the motion. He did not like to appear pessimistic. Tho club was au old! one, and it would be better to go down with colours flying and pay their debts than come out with a deficiency and bo bankrupt. Unless members come to the rescue with a guarantee the prospects wore tor failure. The alteration in the, financial position generally must have its effect, and other clubs in hotter centres had experienced a pretty considerable drop in their revenue. During the holiday season a good many meetings were held, and it depended on the suceesa of racegoers whether they were in funds when Tapanui came on after the holidays. There was really no inducement for country clubs, as tho Government was gradually absorbing all the revenue. They were actually running the concern, to provide revenue for the Government, while inking the risk of having to pay up. , Mr Thomas Edgar moved as an amendmCTlt—“That the races bo held ,os usual.” He did not see that tho financial position would seriously effect the' club, nor that they wore in a position to lose to tho extent mentioned. They might lose £IOO, but ho did not think they could possibly lose more. Next year, by reducing the stakes .to £SOO, they would no doubt show ft profit. Mr' Rodger pointed out that a reduction of stakes would be disastrous. Jf they were to win out they must keep the stakes up. If they had not the backing of their own members they could not carry on.. The Chairman said ho would very much like to eoo the club carry on, but in tho past many ■ good sportsmen hod cither left tho district or died. It seemed that the Government wanted the lot. If they did raco this year they were faced with an expenditure of £3oo’for a now totalisator house next year. Only 20 or 30 members seemed to take any interest in the club, and ho was afraid of the result. He would sooner see the olub shut down honourably and bo in a position to poy everybody, which they could do now by realising on the property. / Mr W. B. Quin said that an attendance , of 17 out of 120 members showed a decided lack of interest. On being put to the rnestijy? the motion was carried by eight votes to sis. The Chairman suggested giving the cloak room to the hospital in lieu of the fund that existed runny years ago as a result of n Hospital Raoo. The (secretary was instructed to call a general meeting of the club to appoint liquidators, and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to tho chair. BOXING. COOK ANtD~OARPENTER.
