UNREST IN INDIA

DEMAND FOR A REPUBLIC

EXTENSION OF THE BOYCOTT.

INTERFERING AMERICANS, •* *

Press Association—By ■ Telegraph-Copyright. WASHINGTON, January 4. Mr Gandhi’s agents announce that United States -senators are heading a group of Americans who,, are pledged to support an Indian Mr Gandhi cabled to his agents that ” a republic has been formed. The American message decided us. An army of defence will be sanctioned, and the boycott extended to individuals. Women and children will_ be safe.” The Indian propagandists here state that the “ American message ” was from Senators Norris and Walsh and a number of publicists and jurists pledging the United States support for, an Indian campaign for independence. Mr Ghose, director of the American Commission to promote self-government for India, explains that the proclamation of a republic of India is due to a pledge sent to the Indian Nationalists by a group of liberty-loving Americans. Provisional Governments will be organised in India and all the provinces placed under a Central Government under Mr Gandhi, _ The official view is that Mr Gandhi has been led mistakenly to interpret the sympathy extended by certain American citizens as representing general American opinion, and that an attempt is being made to secure a definition of the attitude of the United States Administration. The Government officially knows nothing of the movement.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
